The Perks of Being a Widow
Themes: Change, Comedy, Contemporary, Death, Love
Length: 1 Minute
Gender: Female
A woman sits on a cozy chair, perhaps sipping tea or sorting through old photos. Her tone is light and humorous, but with moments of bittersweet reflection. She laughs softly at her own jokes, keeping the mood uplifted despite the topic.
You never realize how much a person takes up space in your life until they’re gone. My husband always said I’d miss him when he was dead, but I don’t think he realized just how much I’d enjoy the extra closet space! I mean, don’t get me wrong—I loved the guy, truly. But there’s something oddly liberating about not having to share the remote, or pretend to care about his fantasy football league. And the sympathy casseroles? They’re a real perk. I haven’t had to cook in weeks! It’s strange though, this mix of freedom and sadness. Like, I keep expecting him to walk through the door, complaining about something or other, but then I remember… nope, he’s not coming back. And that’s when it hits me—love doesn’t really die, it just changes form. Now, instead of nagging me about the dishes, he’s this comforting presence, hovering somewhere between the attic and the garage. I guess what I’m saying is, death changes things, sure, but it doesn’t mean life can’t still surprise you—in the weirdest, funniest ways.
